PAPPA's THOUGHTS ON:
BEING UB40 FAN:
"I discovered UB40 rather late in life (1991). I was working out in a gym in North Carolina and before starting on the treadmill, I would line up my workout tapes for easy access. The list usually included Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff and Third World, to name a few. There was this guy who had been trying to pick me up for several days. Finally, one day he cornered me on the treadmill and commented on my musical choices. He asked me what I thought about UB40. Who? I had never heard of them. When he invited me to his apartment to see his etchings, I mean tapes, I said no, but decided to look into UB40 anyway. The only tape available in the stores was LOL2. I bought it, loved it, ordered what was available through the catalogs and the rest is history. To this day, I still think the best tape to work out to is 'Signing Off'."
JAMS BOARD:
"When I moved to Florida in December of 1997, it was a two-day drive. When I arrived there on day two, I said hello to my father, let my cat out of his case and then hit the internet. The first UB40 site I found was the Jams Board. I posted immediately and have been posting ever since. The Board has been a great way to meet new people and gather info about UB40. For me, the best thing about the Board was how welcome and how comfortable everyone made me feel right from the beginning. Whenever I had a question, people always went out of their way to try to answer it for me."
MUSIC:
Reggae: "UB40, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Exuma and earlier artists like the Heptones, the Paragons, Delroy Wilson, the Maytones, Marcia Griffiths, Jackie Edwards and Crucial Vibes. Other: Herb Alpert, ZZ Hill, Otis Redding, Joe Tex, Simply Red, Clarence Carter, Marvin Sease, Denise Lasalle and Bobby Bland."
REGGAE MUSIC:
"For me, what I find most important in music, especially reggae music, is whether or not the lyrics and the music can stand separately. I particularly like UB40's sound, but taken by themselves, the lyrics are some of the most thought-provoking contemporary 'poetry' I have ever read."
TOP 3 SONGS:
1. "Silent Witness"
2. "Love is All is Alright"
3. depends on my mood
#UBJAMS CHAT:
"Definitely worth the effort it took to finally get there. ;-) The chat is like having a party every week -- one where you're welcome to bring anyone and anything you like. I think it really brings to life the people who post on the Jams Board and lets us get to know each other beyond our mutual love and respect for the music."
A PERSONAL QUOTE from PAPPA:
"I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person."
Pappa tells us, "I was born and raised in New Jersey, 30 minutes outside of Manhattan. And that's the place my heart and soul will always consider home." And she is also known by Pappa Legba.
